Advertising signage policy/Graffiti

Introduction

The University has over many years established a landscape appropriate to a major center of learning and research. The visual image is one of tranquility and tradition, portraying the fundamental values of the University. Modern advertising standards seen in most business centers are therefore almost in direct contrast to the long established University policy on signage.

The University policy on signage states that building names are to be displayed in subdued small bronze lettering. Directional signs are extensive and should be sufficient to direct those unfamiliar with the campus to their intended destination.

There are a few businesses on campus which offer services to the University community. To distinguish these businesses from University Departments in a form which people could easily recognise, the University allows minimal and unobtrusive signs in the corporate image to be displayed.

The Advertising signage policy is designed to create a restrained yet diverse advertising environment.

Policy

All signage is to be approved by the Buildings committee. Compliance with the guidelines below will normally be approved.

Exceptions may be approved in special circumstances
Signs are to not to occupy a rectangular area larger than 0.45m=
Businesses which occupy more than one window on a single frontage are only permitted to display a single sign. Business premises which face two directions can therefore display two signs
The colouring of any sign is to be subdued and unobtrusive. Irridescent or bright colours are not permitted.
Signage is to be professionally designed and executed.

More liberal variations to the above policy may be adopted in Union North Court because it is an area directly related to student activities.

Fluorescent or backlit signs will not be approved. Lighting associated with signage is not considered as the University is largely unpopulated at night.

There are several exceptions to the above policy which have been approved by Buildings Committees in the past. They are;

  • The Union House signs on the Union Building,
  • The display area of the Bookroom, and
  • The National Bank sign in the enclosed eastern entrance.

Temporary Signage

Temporary banners advertising forthcoming student activities may be displayed on the front of the Union (eastern face) or in the North Court, at the discretion of MUSU. All banners are to be properly restrained and exhibit lettering which is properly designed and executed.

No other banners will be permitted without specific approval of the Buildings Committee and then only to publicise official University events such as Discovery Day.

NOTE: Posters are to be placed only on the widely dispersed poster bollards provided around the University.

Posters are not to be placed in the following areas;

  • External walls of Buildings,
  • Pathways,
  • Roads,
  • Light poles,
  • Trees, and
  • Windows.

Similarly, posters are only to placed on official notice boards within buildings.

Short Term Directional Signage

Short term directional signage used for courses and seminars may be displayed on signboards. These signboards are available from Building Supervisors or the Facilities Hiring Office.

Permanent Notice boards

Additional permanent notice boards and/ or permanent directional signs may be obtained by Departments from the Property and Campus Services.

Chalking

Chalking on roadways and footpaths is permitted in uncovered areas only. Substances added to chalk to improve its resistance to rain are not permitted.

Chalking on other surfaces such as buildings and construction site facades is strictly prohibited.

Graffiti

Posters and chalking placed in unauthorised areas will be classified as Graffiti and will be removed immediately. Any organisation responsible for placing posters or chalking in unauthorised places will be asked to pay for the cost of removal.

WARNING !

Any person caught defacing buildings or other University equipment will be handed to the Police and may be subject to prosecution.
