Recruiting
Wardens
We are always looking for people to become Wardens. As a Warden you
will be trained in emergency response and issued with equipment so you
can perform your duties. The University, staff, students and visitors
all value your efforts and you should feel proud that you are making
a significant contribution to workplace safety in your building.
Desirable Warden Qualities
- Experience through training in emergency procedures and
drills
- Knowledge of the culture of staff in your building (e.g:
where people go for a smoke when their boss is not watching!)
- Trust of their fellow staff
- Ability to think clearly and make decisions
- Leadership - Wardens should use an autocratic style of
leadership when evacuating their area
- Limitations - Wardens need to know their own limitations
(e.g.: fear of heights)
- Quick Responder when it comes to implementing actions effectively
Common Questions
Q: Will I be covered by insurance?
A: Yes - as long as you are not reckless in your actions and follow
your training, defined procedures and use your common sense.
Q: Will I receive training?
A: Yes - your BEC should arrange for training
in Warden duties. You should also attend refresher training every
couple of years.
Q: Do I need any special equipment?
A: No - but you will be issued a Warden helmet to wear during emergencies.
Some Wardens also buy a torch.
Q: Do I receive extra pay or anything like that?
A: No - at this stage the position is voluntary with no monetary reward.
Q: Will being a Warden take up a lot of my time?
A: No - in most University buildings the role of a Warden remains
fairly small. You will be involved with evacuation drills and training.
Unless your building has a lot of emergencies, you should find it
very easy to slot in with your work.
