About Emergency Management training

In the event of an emergency the smooth execution of emergency control procedures can be achieved only if everyone is thoroughly familiar with what is expected of them. The risk of panic, personal injury and loss of property is significantly reduced by having an efficient Emergency Control Organisation (ECO), and occupants trained in emergency response procedures.

The EHS Unit offers a variety of emergency response related training and education throughout the year. For specific information regarding each of these courses, view the appropriate sections found below.


Training courses offered

Course Name Description Designed For Duration
Warden Training – Roles and Responsibilities Provides background information, information about roles and responsibilities, and procedures. It also provides information about the types of emergencies that may occur in building and structures around the University All Wardens (Floor, Area, BECs) 1.5 hours.
Building Emergency Controllers – Emergency Plans Designed for BECs who coordinate the emergency response and preparedness activities within the building they look after. Topics include an overview of the specific emergency management plans for the building, a tour of their facility covering the emergency response systems and a session discussing emergency response and planning activities.

Building Emergency Controllers and Deputy Building Emergency Controllers.

Pre-requisite: Completion of "Warden Training – Roles and Responsibilities" course.

1 hour session on site.
Suspicious Package and Threat Response Designed to give participants the tools to confidently and promptly deal with the threat of suspicious packages and threats received via communication lines such as phone and mail. Topics include threat checklists, search procedures and dealing with the emergency services. Frontline staff and anyone who potentially could find themselves receiving such a threat. 1 hour session.
Fire Extinguisher

Training in purpose and use of different types of fire extinguishers in a theoretical and practical environment.

Includes practical "live fire" training - see a preview of the fire extingisher Intelligent Training System.

Everyone. 1.5 hour session.
First Aid First Aid training should be conducted by an approved external training provider, and should be arranged by the department. For more information refer to the EHS Training: First Aid on the EHS Unit website. First Aiders Determined by provider.

  • The emergency response courses are held on location in the BIO 21 BOARDROOM, DAVID PENNINGTON BUILDING (102). Enter off Flemington Rd, where you will be guided by reception.
  • The BEC course is held in your building.
