Q: I am interested in learning how to use a fire extinguisher. Where do I book onto a course?

Q: How do I request changes to Emergency Evacuation Maps in our building?
A: Please check the section on evacuation maps in this website.

Q: I am not sure if my fire extinguishers or fire hoses are being checked?
A: Most fire extinguishers are checked twice per year as part of a contract arranged by the Maintenance Department. Please contact maintenance to query your fire extinguisher maintenance program.

Q: I need to order some helmets for my Wardens. Where do I do this?
A: All warden equipment is detailed in the Warden Equipment section.

Q: I would like some replacement Visitor Emergency Guides. Where do I get them from?
A: The guides can be requested from the Emergency Management Coordinator - refer to the publications section.

Q: What do I do in an emergency?
A: Information about handling emergency situations can be found in the Emergencies section.

Q: Where can I find more information about management of dangerous goods?
A: You should check the EHS Manual and visit the Environment, Health & Safety Unit for more information.

Q: How do I re-schedule an emergency training course that I have been booked on?
A: Please contact the course bookings coordinator listed on the contacts page.

Q: Do I have to evacuate during an evacuation drill?
A: Yes you do. Please visit the section on evacuations and evacuation drills on this website.

Q: When should I replace my Warden helmet?
A: Our Warden helmets comply with AS/NZS 1801. These helmets are not usually exposed to sunlight or subjected to significant wear and tear. The life span of the helmet will be longer than the harness. If the helmet has not been dropped and is kept free from petrol, paint, adhesives, aerosol sprays or cleaning agents, it should last many years.

Q: Is there a counselling service I can talk to about an emergency incident I was involved with?
A: Yes, the University has a Counselling Service. More information can be found in the recovery section..

Q: Can a postgraduate student act as a floor warden and are they covered by insurance?
A: Postgraduate students and UoM Staff are each recognised as "Insured Persons" under UoM's Public Liability Insurance cover. Accordingly, UoM's insurer would accept - that postgrads acting in the capacity as floor-wardens would still fall within the UoM's recognised "business" activities.
