Medical Emergency

The range of medical emergencies can be vast and diverse and can include heart attack and failure, airway blockage, epileptic fits or seizures, lacerations and other types of serious injury. Each type of incident will present varying conditions and behaviours.

Remember to always make a thorough assessment of the situation you are presented with and seek to deal with it calmly and effectively. A clear and rational approach will help allay fear and provide you with a frame of mind that will enable you to deal adequately with the emergency.

Injury

  1. Move injured person away from danger if safe to do so.
  2. Call for an Ambulance on 000. State the location clearly. Have someone from the ECO meet the Ambulance Paramedics outside the building and at the front gates.
  3. Security staff are trained in first aid and may be able to assist, call (x46666 Parkville), 24 hours a day - Parkville.
  4. The Health Service provides General Practitioner and nursing services during the hours 8.45 am to 5.00 pm; phone 8344 6904 or 8344 6905 - Parkville.

Note: When using a mobile phone you should dial 112 instead of 000. Both will work, but 112 is preferred for mobile phones. Some CDMA phones may not accept 112. Check with your service provider.

All injuries must be reported to the EHS Unit on an Incident Report Form S3, within 24 hours. For further information, refer to Section 4 of the University Environment Health and Safety Manual

In addition, the employer is required by the Occupational Health and Safety Act to report serious injuries, and incidents with the potential for serious injury, in writing to the Victorian Workcover Authority within 48 hours. This will be undertaken by the EHS Unit
