Fire

A fire in the University is an emergency which causes the greatest concern for staff and students. If all staff accept that fire prevention is their responsibility, the potential for fires can be greatly reduced and the severity of any fire that does start will be minimised.

Any person discovering a fire should:

  1. Activate the nearest break glass fire alarm switch.
  2. Rescue any person in immediate danger, if it is safe to do so.
  3. Isolate the fire (close doors), alert other people in the immediate area.
  4. Contact Security on extension x46666 or 8344 6666 giving the following details:
    • Location of fire (building name and floor)
    • Extent of fire (or nature of incident)
    • Are there any injured persons (e.g. is an ambulance or medical assistance require
    • Name of person reporting the fire or incident. This call should be reported to the Floor Warden.
  5. Fight fire if safe to do so.
  6. Take direction from the Floor warden.

Fire Safety

Observance of the following fire safety points will help assist staff with their responsibilities:

  • Report any potential fire hazard to your Department Head / Manager or Floor Warden for immediate corrective action. Hazards which can not be immediately eliminated by local action are to be reported to the EHS Unit.
  • Observe the University no smoking policy.
  • Big flamesNotify Maintenance of any damaged or unsafe electrical equipment, exposed wiring etc.
  • Where flammable liquids are required to be used and kept in the work area, they must be in approved safety containers or flammable liquid storage cabinets.
  • Do not allow rubbish to accumulate.
  • Keep fire doors and exit paths clear at all times.
  • Do not block access to fire fighting equipment.
  • Keep fire exit stairwell doors closed at all times.
  • Report any leak or spillage of flammable gases, liquids or other dangerous goods in the first instance to Security Emergency x46666 or 8344 6666 and then to the EHS Unit.
  • Be aware of the types and locations of all fire fighting equipment within your work area.
  • Ensure that safe work procedures are followed when welding or using other heat sources.
  • Do not restrict the free flow of air around radiators or air vents on electrical equipment.

If after all of the above precautions are observed and a fire should occur, prompt action by staff will ensure the safety of all and also prevent a small fire from becoming a large and life threatening one.
