EHS Training
Competency-based Environment Health and Safety (EHS) training courses are run by the EHS Unit. Competency-based training is a requirement of the University's EHS Management System. Competency-based training focuses on training individuals for actual jobs in the workplace. The emphasis is on identifying what people need to do in their jobs; identifying clearly the performance standard required in the job by the industry or employer; and indicating how, when, where and by whom assessment will occur.

Frequently Asked Questions About Enrolling in Training through Themis
- I'm having a problem with having my enrolment endorsed by my supervisor
- How do I find the venue of the training?
- I'm enrolled in training but I haven't received any information from Themis. OR: my enrolment disappeared from Themis!
- I have another problem with Themis. OR: Help - I don't know how to use Themis at all!
I'm having a problem with having my enrolment endorsed by my supervisor
Enrolment in EHS classes requires supervisor endorsement to allow supervisor monitoring of staff compliance with training requirements, and as a courtesy to the supervisor as it ensures notification of staff absence for training.
- Places in training cannot be allocated until the enrolment status is updated to Supervisor Endorsed.
- However, in the event of technical difficulties (including supervisor unavailability, wrong supervisor in Themis, etc) we are happy to update your enrolment status for you manually. In this event, please consult your current or acting supervisor about your enrolment, and then contact the EHS Unit to request manual update of your training enrolment status.
- Places in training are assigned one week before the date of the class. If your enrolment status has not been updated to Supervisor Endorsed before this time, you may not be allocated a place. However, should your supervisor subsequently endorse your application after this deadline, you may still be able to be allocated a place if one is available - contact the EHS Unit to enquire.
How do I find the venue of the training?
The EHS Unit does not have its own training rooms, and uses various allocated teaching venues. This can be a source of confusion:
- On the Offering Screen (where the blue "Enroll" briefcase icons appear), click the title of the session of the training you are interested in, to get to the Class Screen.
- On the Class Screen, the venue appears under the heading Class Resource Bookings.
- Note that the Location Address is NOT the venue - it is the location of the training centre's office.
- Refer to How to find EHS Training Venue in Themis [.pdf] for further clarification.
I'm enrolled in training but I haven't received any information from Themis. OR: my enrolment disappeared from Themis!
Check your enrolment status using Themis Self Service Training and Development.
This question is often asked by staff who have been Waitlisted, or who were not able to be granted a place in the course due to lack of supervisor approval by the deadline.
In these scenarios, your enrolment can appear to "disappear" in Themis. Actually it has moved behind the Requested Learning tab instead of the Current Learning tab.
Refer to the official Quick Reference Card View Training Record in Themis Self Service[.pdf] for more information.
I have another problem with Themis. OR: Help - I don't know how to use Themis at all!
General training and assistance needs, and technical problems with Themis, should be raised with the Themis Service Desk in the first instance on x49500 or at http://www.themis.unimelb.edu.au/support/service/.
