Environmental Programs
The Environment Programs of the University of Melbourne are run by the EHS Unit. These Programs are:
- Reducing our carbon footprint
- Recycling and Waste Disposal at the University of Melbourne
- Green Office Program - which aims to work closely with staff to improve the environmental performance within the University's offices by following a ten point environmental plan.
- Green Laboratory Program - working to minimise environmental risks associated with the University's Laboratories. This is achieved by following a laboratory-specific ten point plan and utilising environmental gap analysis techniques.
- World Environment Day - The EHS Unit in conjunction with the Office of Environmental Programs holds an annual function to celebrate World Environment Day on 5 June.
- Earth Hour - 2008 marked the University's inaugural participation in Earth Hour, involving turning off all non-essential lights and appliances at 8pm, 28 March 2008.
About the University's Environmental Management Systems
The University has demonstrated its commitment to the environment through the implementation of an Environmental Management System compliant to ISO 14001and is a signatory to the Talloires Declaration.
The Environmental Management System ISO 14001 is an International Standard. It enables an organisation to formulate a policy regarding environmental objectives taking into account legislative requirements and information about significant environmental impacts. The Environmental Management System is integrated with the University's Safety Management System.
The Talloires Declaration consists of a Ten Point Action Plan for directing the efforts of Universities in addressing environmental issues locally and internationally.
The Environment Programs for the University are supported by the Environment Advisory Committee (EAC) and the Environment Policy for the University. Through the EHS Unit and dedicated staff, the University has programs in place for the Management of Substances Hazardous to the Environment, Reuse and Recycling and Energy Reduction the Green Office and Green Laboratory Programs.
