Audits and Certification

Certification: SafetyMAP and ISO 14001

SafetyMAP (Safety Management Achievement Program)
is the name of an audit standard developed by the Victorian WorkCover Authority. The University of Melbourne uses SafetyMAP as an audit tool to ensure safe systems of work at the University. In addition the University is a self-insurer for workers compensation. The Victorian WorkCover Authority requires self insurers to have in place safety management systems to at least SafetyMAP Initial Level. The University of Melbourne is currently accredited to SafetyMAP Initial Level Version 4.
ISO 14001
is the name of an audit standard for Environmental Management Systems, developed by the International Organisation for Standardization. The University has developed its EMS in compliance with ISO 14001. This system provides a framework for minimising environmental impacts, complying with legislative requirements and contractual obligations, and the measurement of continual improvement targets and outcomes. The University of Melbourne is currently accredited to ISO 14001.

Internal Audits

The Internal Audit Office coordinates and manages internal EHS Audits. The Audit program for the following year is scheduled every November. Faculty /Departments are provided with dates and the criteria to be audited at least 2 months prior to the audit.

External Audits

The Internal Audit Office coordinates and manages external EHS audits for accreditation and surveillance of Environment Health and Safety Management Systems. The University of Melbourne is accredited on all sites to SafetyMAP initial level and ISO 14001 through the external audit program with Lloyd's Register Quality Assurance.
